MIAC Profiles of Excellence: Ian Bauer, Hamline University
Bauer-MCC

No matter how talented an athlete may be, success is not achieved without a dedication to training and a willingness to work hard. Putting that extra effort in day after day in practice makes it easier to do in the heat of competition. That determination and grit is what separates winners from the rest of the pack. This work ethic has helped Ian Bauer of Hamline University become an All-American runner. The same perseverance puts him on tack to be a success in life beyond college.

“Ian is one of the most thoughtful and dedicated trainers I have worked with,” said long time Piper coach Paul Schmaedeke. “He has talent, but he is good because he had made himself good. Ian is a great competitor who always makes sound tactical decisions when he races. If you are going to beat Ian, you need to be flat out better than him because you will not beat him because he made an error. He possesses what most of your great distance runner possess, a great feel for the rhythm of the race.”

His hard work and determination have enabled Ian to be All-MIAC three times, All-Central Region twice and All-American once in cross country. He has also earned All-MIAC honors twice in track and field along with four All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors.

That same commitment to being the best has helped Ian post a 3.90 GPA while majoring in Economics and Business Management. He has been named Academic All-MIAC four times. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has honored him three times as a Division III All-Academic scholar-athlete.
