2008-09 MIAC Women's Hockey Awards

St. Paul, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2008-09 MIAC Women's Hockey Awards today, February 26, 2009. University of St. Thomas senior forward Jackie Carroll was named the 2008-09 MIAC Player of the Year. Carroll led St. Thomas a second place finish in the conference standings with a 14-2-2 record. During the regular season, Carroll led the MIAC in points (25) and assists (18).

Augsburg College forward Tiffany Magnuson was selected as the 2008-09 Sheila Brown Award recipient. The award is given to a senior who has made a long-term contribution to her team’s success and who has consistently competed with good sportsmanship. Magnuson was selected as the recipient based on four main criteria 1) Team Leadership; 2) Sportsmanship and volunteer work; 3) Academic Excellence; 4) Hockey skills and production.

Bethel University head coach Charlie Burggraf was named the 2008-09 MIAC Coach of the Year. Burggraf led the Royals to a third place finish in the conference with a 10-5-3 record. Bethel's conference winning percentage during the 2008-09 season will go down as the best in school history.

As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC announced the third annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's hockey. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
